The exhibition presents the events surrounding the November 17s of 1939 and 1989 presented in two lines: one in the form of student destinies, the other by the traditions of November 17 and its role in contemporary public perception.
The exhibition in the Carolinum cloister was designed by using solitary freestanding objects in space. Dominant large-scale graphics on the structures allong with wall projection of photographs and films emhasize the impression of the events by using authentic historical photos. A characteristic feature of the exhibition are the personal stories of students in folders on thin steel racks. The visitors can browse in those folders and discover the fate of randomly selected individuals.
An important part of the message of the exhibition are the emotions. Emphasis is placed on the feeling of visitors of the exhibition, based on the effects of large-scale photographs and projections, sound production and instalations to evoke the authentic atmosphere of the student demonstration on November 17 1989 – the events are presented by a narrow tunnel - symbolizing the difficult path to democracy. The aim of the installation is that the visitor empathizes with the students, while in the tunnel he passes through a police cordon and monitors with authentic footage of the conflict.
